Can Indian suppliers pack edible oil under my brand?

Yes. Many Gujarat oil mills fill PET bottles, jars and tins under the buyer's brand. You supply or approve the artwork, and you remain responsible for meeting your market's label rules.

Yes. Many Indian oil mills, especially in Gujarat, fill bottles, jars and tins under the buyer's own brand. They print or buy labels to your artwork and pack to your sizes.

The catch is that you, as the brand owner and importer, carry the legal responsibility for what is on the label and in the pack. The mill fills it. You must make sure it is right.

What a private label order involves

  • Pack format and size: PET bottles, HDPE jars, tins or glass, in the sizes your market uses.
  • Artwork: you provide it, or the mill's designer adapts your design for their bottles and printers.
  • Labels and printed packaging: usually bought by the mill from local printers, to your approved proof.
  • Cartons: printed or plain outer cartons with your marks and lot codes.
  • Product: a fixed oil and process, defined by a written specification.
  • Coding: batch number, production date and best-before printed on each unit.

Minimum quantities

Printed labels, bottles and tins have their own minimum print or production runs. That often sets the minimum order more than the oil does. A common pattern is one container per order, with several sizes or oils mixed if the mill agrees. Ask what the minimum is per design and per size. General MOQ points are in MOQ for agri products from India.

Checks before you commit

  • The mill fills in its own plant, not through a third-party packer you have not seen.
  • The plant holds an FSSAI licence and, ideally, a recognised food safety certification your customers accept.
  • Filling is clean and closed, with nitrogen flushing if you need it.
  • Seals and caps pass a leak test, and cartons hold up when stacked.
  • The mill keeps retained samples from each batch, so you can check complaints later.
  • The best-before period you print is backed by the mill's own storage test data, not a habit.
  • The current export policy allows the oil and pack size you plan to buy. Edible oil export rules have changed before, so check with DGFT.

The label is your job

Indian mills know Indian label rules well, but your market's rules may differ on product names, allergen declaration, nutrition tables, language and the address of the responsible business. Have your artwork checked against your own regulations before printing. See labelling rules for imported edible oils.

Also confirm who owns the artwork files and plates, and that the mill will not sell your design to anyone else. Write it into the contract. The broader topic is covered in private label packing from India.
