The most common finishing defects in imitation jewellery are scratches, bubbles or blisters in the plating, uneven colour, dull or burnt patches, pitting, water stains and peeling. Most come from three causes: poor polishing before plating, poor cleaning between plating stages, and rough handling after.
This guide covers the surface finish only. For stones, findings, breakage and the wider list, see the most common quality problems in imitation jewellery.
Defects and their usual causes
- Scratches and scuffs: pieces rubbing together after plating, or poor buffing. Look on flat, shiny areas.
- Bubbles and blisters: grease or dirt left on the metal, or trapped gas from casting pores. They often lift and peel later.
- Peeling or flaking: poor adhesion, usually from bad cleaning or a missing underlayer.
- Pitting and pinholes: porosity in the casting that polishing cannot hide. Plating sinks into the holes.
- Uneven colour: different baths, plating times or solution strength, or parts from different batches combined in one set.
- Dull, burnt or brown patches: too much current in the plating bath, or contaminated solution.
- Water marks and stains: poor rinsing and drying before lacquer.
- Lacquer runs, drips and sticky surface: too much coating or poor curing.
- Bare spots in recesses: plating does not reach deep areas of ornate designs.
Why these matter more than they look
Many finishing faults get worse with time. A small blister becomes a peeled patch in a few weeks of wear, and a pinhole lets sweat reach the brass, which then tarnishes from underneath. A batch that looks acceptable on the inspection table can produce returns three months later.
How to reduce them
- Approve a master sample and keep a sealed copy for comparison.
- Plate each set's parts together, in one batch, so colour matches.
- Ask how pieces are separated after plating, and require individual bags.
- Specify an anti-tarnish coating and its curing method.
- Set clear acceptance criteria for each defect type before production starts.
