Kundan jewellery wholesale from India: a buyer guide

How to find kundan jewellery manufacturers in Rajkot and elsewhere, which questions to ask about setting and foil, and which sets tend to sell.

For kundan jewellery wholesale from India, look for a maker that does its own stone setting, because setting is what separates a good kundan piece from a poor one. Rajkot kundan manufacturers are the main source for imitation kundan at export volumes, while fine traditional kundan is a separate, hand-set craft.

Be clear which you are buying. Almost everything sold wholesale for export is imitation kundan: glass or synthetic stones set in a metal frame, finished to resemble the traditional style. Real kundan versus imitation kundan explains the difference.

How do you find a kundan jewellery manufacturer?

Kundan work is labour-heavy, so many makers are small workshops with a handful of setters. Ask each candidate how many setters they employ, how many sets they finish in a week, and which parts they subcontract.

Search results mix makers with traders who simply resell. Ask for a video of the setting bench with your design in progress. A trader will struggle to produce it. Finding genuine manufacturers in Rajkot covers verification in more detail.

What to ask about the build

These points decide how the piece looks after a year of wear:

  • What the stones are made of, and whether they are glass, synthetic or resin.
  • Whether the stones are set into a foil-backed bezel or simply glued, since glued stones loosen faster. See how kundan stones are set and how long they last.
  • The base metal and plating, because brass or alloy with a thin plating tarnishes where it touches skin.
  • How the back of the piece is finished, as rough backs scratch skin and show poor workmanship.
  • Whether any enamel work on the reverse is cold-applied or fired.

Finishes and sets that sell

Kundan is sold mostly as matched sets: a necklace, earrings and often a maang tikka. Antique gold-tone and rose gold finishes are common, with pearl drops and green or red stones for bridal wear. Lightweight kundan-look earrings sell well outside the wedding season.

Colour matching across a set is the usual problem. A necklace and earrings made on different days, or by different units, can show a slightly different gold tone. State in your purchase order that all parts of a set must come from one production lot.

Samples, minimums and checks

Order a full set as a sample, not a single piece, and compare it with the bulk later. Many makers set a minimum quantity per design, and handwork means lead times are longer than for cast fashion pieces. Plan for that early in your season.

For the shipment itself, check a random selection for loose or missing stones, foil colour differences and clasp strength. The principle in why quality drops after the first container applies strongly to handwork.

Why does kundan need extra time?

Kundan is slower to make than cast fashion jewellery because setting, foil work and finishing are done piece by piece. A maker who promises the same lead time as for plain plated earrings is either holding stock, subcontracting heavily or planning to cut corners.

Build a margin into your calendar. For a festive or wedding season, ask the maker for a production plan with dates for sample approval, bulk start, mid-production check and dispatch. A mid-production visit or video, taken when about half the pieces are set, is the best moment to catch a colour or setting problem while it can still be fixed.
