What mesh sizes are common for guar gum powder?

Guar gum powder is commonly traded at around 100, 150, 200 and 300 mesh, with 200 mesh widely used in food. Finer powder hydrates faster but can lump more easily.

Guar gum powder is commonly traded at around 100, 150, 200 and 300 mesh. In food, 200 mesh is a widely used choice, while coarser powders appear in some industrial uses and finer powders where very fast hydration matters.

Mesh is a trade description, not a fixed standard. What counts is the sieve used, the percentage that must pass it and how the test is done.

What mesh actually means

Mesh refers to the number of openings per linear inch of a test sieve. A higher number means smaller openings and a finer powder. A "200 mesh" guar gum usually means that a stated share of the powder passes a 200 mesh sieve, for example a figure such as 95% or 99% minimum, given here for illustration.

Different sieve standards exist, so the opening size for a given mesh number can vary slightly. Write the opening size in microns, as well as the mesh number, in your specification.

Common mesh sizes and typical uses

These pairings are typical, not rules. The right mesh depends on your process, mixing equipment and the other ingredients.

  • Around 100 mesh: coarser powder, often for industrial uses or where slower, lump-free dispersion is wanted.
  • Around 150 mesh: a middle option used in some food and technical applications.
  • Around 200 mesh: a common food grade choice for sauces, dairy, bakery and beverages.
  • Around 300 mesh or finer: used where fast hydration is the priority.

How mesh affects performance

  • Hydration speed: finer particles hydrate faster, so short-time viscosity rises.
  • Lumping: very fine powder can form lumps (fish eyes) if added to water too quickly.
  • Dust: finer grades are dustier to handle and need good extraction in the plant.
  • Flow: coarser powder flows and doses more easily in automatic feeders.
  • Final viscosity: mesh changes how fast viscosity is reached, but not the gum content.

What to put in the specification

If you also buy psyllium, the same logic applies to husk powder, explained in what mesh sizes are available for psyllium husk powder. Viscosity grades are covered in what viscosity grades are available for guar gum powder.

  • Mesh number and opening size in microns.
  • Minimum percentage passing, and any limit on the very fine fraction if dust matters.
  • Sieve standard and test method, including sample size and shaking time.
  • Viscosity grade tested on the same lot, since mesh and viscosity go together.

Common problems

Buyers sometimes receive a powder with the right pass rate but a different particle profile, which changes how it disperses on the line. Others find coarse husk particles that pass the sieve but show as specks. A sample run through your own process is the best check before you approve a supplier.

How we help

We collect samples in the mesh sizes you need, have particle size tested at an NABL-accredited lab, and check the same parameter on pre-shipment samples. Start with a free sourcing review.
