Indian makers build pouch filling and sealing machines, vertical and horizontal form-fill-seal machines, premade pouch fillers, cartoners, case packers and the auxiliary machines around them. The right choice depends on your product, your pack format and the speed you need.
Gujarat has many packaging machine makers, especially around Ahmedabad and Rajkot. Other strong clusters exist in western and southern India.
The main machine families
- Vertical form-fill-seal machines make pillow or gusseted bags from a roll of film, as explained in what a VFFS machine is.
- Horizontal form-fill-seal or flow-wrap machines wrap solid items such as biscuits, bars and soap.
- Premade pouch machines open, fill and seal stand-up or zipper pouches that arrive already made.
- Cartoning machines erect cartons, insert product or pouches and close them. They range from manual-load to fully automatic.
- Case packers, check-weighers, coders, labellers and metal detectors complete the end of the line.
Matching the filler to the product
The filler matters as much as the bagging machine. Each type suits a different product form.
- Volumetric cup fillers measure a set volume and suit free-flowing granules such as sugar, salt and seeds.
- Auger fillers drive powder with a screw and suit spice powders, flour and milk powder.
- Multihead weighers combine several small weighed portions and suit snacks, nuts and irregular pieces.
- Piston or pump fillers measure liquids and pastes such as oil, sauces and ghee.
Speed, pack range and changeover
Speed is stated in packs per minute, but it depends on pack size, film, product and seal type. A machine that runs fast on a small sachet will run slower on a large bag. Ask for speed at each of your pack sizes.
Check the range of bag widths and lengths the machine can make, and which change parts each size needs. A vertical machine usually needs a separate forming collar for each bag width. Ask how long a size change takes.
Accuracy is a separate question with legal weight, covered in filling accuracy.
What to send makers
Makers can only quote properly if they know what they are packing. Send a product sample, bulk density, pack sizes, film or pouch specification, target speed and a sketch of your floor space. The full list is set out in how to write a packaging machine specification.
Ask each maker to run a trial with your product and your film before you order. This shows how well the machine handles dust, fines, static and sealing on your actual materials.
Tell makers about your factory conditions as well. High humidity, dust and unstable power all affect packaging machines. A maker who knows these in advance can quote a stabiliser, dust covers or a panel air conditioner. Otherwise you find the problem after installation.
