How to photograph jewellery samples for pre-sales

Shoot approved samples on a plain background in soft, even light, with a scale reference and on-model shots, so buyers and customers see exactly what the bulk order will be.

To photograph jewellery samples for pre-sales, shoot the approved samples on a plain background in soft, even light, from several angles, with one shot showing scale and, if possible, one on a model. The goal is to show exactly what the bulk order will look like, so that pre-orders, wholesale buyers and marketplace customers are not surprised when the goods arrive.

Pre-sale photos let you take orders or test demand while production runs, which shortens the time your money is tied up in stock.

Set-up

  • A plain white or light grey background, or a neutral texture for lifestyle shots.
  • Soft, diffused light from a light box or a large window with a diffuser; avoid direct flash, which flattens stones and burns out plating.
  • A tripod, so every shot is sharp and consistent.
  • A phone with a good camera is enough for most listings; use its macro or portrait mode for close-ups.
  • Clean the pieces and wear gloves to avoid fingerprints on plating.

The shots you need

  • Front view of the full piece or set.
  • Close-up of the stones, setting and plating detail.
  • Side and back views, including the clasp, hook or earring back.
  • A scale shot, with a ruler, a coin or on a model, so size is clear.
  • On-model or on-bust shots for necklaces and earrings, which sell far better than flat shots.
  • The packaging, if it is part of the offer.

Show the bulk, not a better sample

Photograph the sealed, approved sample that the bulk order will be matched against, not a specially finished piece. Keep colours true: set white balance correctly and edit only to remove dust or background marks. If you show a rose-gold or antique finish that the bulk cannot match, the returns will follow.

For designs still in development, label photos clearly as samples and say that the colour and finish may vary slightly.

Use the photos in your listings

Pair the photos with honest, specific descriptions: base metal, plating, stone type, size and weight. Marketplace and customer-protection rules increasingly expect accurate material descriptions, and they reduce returns.
