How do I arrange remote support from an Indian manufacturer?

Agree it in the contract: named contacts, response times, working hours, the tools used and secure remote access to the controller. Then test it before the machine ships.

Arrange remote support in writing before you order, not after the first breakdown. Agree who you call, how fast they must respond, which tools they use and how they can reach the machine's controls.

Most Indian makers will offer phone and video support. The difference between good and poor support usually lies in how well it was planned.

What to put in the contract

  • Named service contacts, with a backup person, and a single number or email for faults.
  • Support hours that overlap with your working day, bearing in mind that India runs on a single time zone, UTC+5:30.
  • Response times for a first reply and for a technical answer, with priority for a machine that is stopped.
  • The language support will be given in.
  • How long free remote support lasts, and how it is charged afterwards.
  • A route to escalate a fault to senior engineers if the first contact cannot fix it.

Tools that make it work

Video calls on a phone solve many faults. The engineer sees the alarm screen, the panel and the noise or leak. Ask your operators to film the problem before calling, and to note the alarm codes.

For CNC machines and PLC-controlled lines, remote access to the controller is far more powerful. A secure remote access router lets the maker read alarms, check parameters and update programs. Agree how access is switched on and off, and who approves each session. Treat it as a cybersecurity question, and involve your IT team.

Good documents reduce calls. Make sure the machine arrives with wiring diagrams, alarm lists and a parameter backup, as set out in what documents should come with a machine.

Build local skills too

Remote support works best when someone on your side can act on instructions. Send a technician to the factory test, or ask for training during installation. Our guide to training and installation support abroad explains what to ask for.

For a large fleet of machines, a local service partner may be worth appointing. Remote support from India then backs up the partner instead of replacing it.

Test the arrangement before the machine leaves India. Make one support call during the factory test and check the remote connection works.

Keep a fault log

Ask your team to log every fault, the call made, the advice given and the result. Share the log with the maker every few months. Repeated faults then show up as a pattern, which helps you argue for a design fix or a warranty replacement instead of another phone call.

The log also tells you whether the support terms are being met. If response times slip, you have the evidence to raise it with the maker's management.
