The large international inspection groups, including the TÜV organisations, Bureau Veritas (BV), SGS and Intertek, all offer inspection services in India and can send inspectors to factories in Gujarat. Indian inspection agencies also work across the state.
For your order, the brand on the report matters less than the person who does the work. Ask who the inspector will be and what they know about your product.
We do not rank these firms, and none is the right choice for every order. Each has strengths in particular product groups and particular kinds of work.
What these firms can do
- Pre-shipment and during-production inspection of components and machines.
- Witnessing of factory tests such as pressure tests, load tests and performance tests.
- Review of material certificates and verification of material by testing.
- Third-party inspection certificates, often required for oil, gas and infrastructure projects.
- Loading supervision and container sealing.
- Product certification and testing for some markets, which is a separate service from inspection.
How to choose between them
Your customer may decide for you. Many project specifications name approved inspection agencies. If yours does, use one from the list and confirm which office will issue the certificate.
If you have a free choice, ask each firm the same questions. Which office will cover the factory? Is the inspector qualified for your product, such as valves, castings, pressure equipment or machine tools? Will they measure to your drawing and record values? How soon can they attend after notice?
Do not assume that a famous name guarantees a strong inspection. The quality of the report depends on your checklist and the inspector's experience.
Factories in Gujarat are spread across Rajkot, Ahmedabad, Jamnagar, Vadodara and smaller industrial towns. An inspector based nearby can attend at short notice and return for a re-inspection without delay. Ask each firm where its inspector will travel from, and whether travel time is charged separately.
Who pays and who instructs
Book and pay the inspector yourself where you can. If the factory books the inspection, the inspector may still be independent, but the instructions and the timing are controlled by the party you are checking.
Whoever books the inspector, send the checklist, drawings and specification directly to the inspection firm yourself. Ask for the report to come to you first, at the same time as the factory, and not through the factory.
A formal third-party inspection certificate has its own scope and wording. Agree that scope in the purchase order. For a broader view of what to check, see what inspections to do before machinery shipment.
