Choosing a tile manufacturer in India by capability, not claims

Presses, kilns, digital printing and sorting predict tile quality better than any brochure. Here is what to look for in a tile manufacturer in India for each tile type.

To choose a floor tiles supplier in India, judge the plant's equipment and process, not its claims. The press, kiln, glazing and printing line, and sorting system together determine whether a tile is flat, uniform in size and consistent in shade.

A brochure listing every tile type tells you little. Ask which of them the plant makes in-house, on which line, and how it checks the output.

Which equipment matters for which tile?

Match the capability to the product before you compare plants:

  • Large-format tiles and slabs need presses and kilns sized for them, plus careful handling and flatness control.
  • Glazed vitrified tiles need a digital printing line with enough heads and colours to reproduce natural stone and wood designs and several faces per design.
  • Wall tiles need a flexible glaze and print setup that can switch designs quickly.
  • Thick outdoor tiles need strong presses and controlled firing to reach the required strength.

What do kilns and presses tell you?

The kiln sets the firing profile, and a consistent profile gives consistent size and shade. Ask how many kilns the plant runs, whether it has a standby, and how it manages temperature. Press size and tonnage limit which formats and thicknesses the plant can make at all.

A plant claiming a size it has no press for is outsourcing. Cross-check with how to check a tile factory's real production capacity.

Why do sorting and quality control matter?

Sorting is where a plant separates grades and shades. Automated lines read size and surface and group tiles into calibre and shade classes, and a human check should confirm them. Weak sorting is the main source of mixed boxes.

Ask what the plant's sorting step records and who signs off. See tile grade sorting on a production line for what good looks like.

How do you verify these claims?

You verify by seeing, not by asking. A factory audit covers the equipment, the process and the records, as set out in what a factory audit report should contain. Then you test production samples against your specification.

If you cannot visit, a third party or a sourcing agent can attend. The point is to have someone independent look at the lines.

What should you ask in the first call?

Ask which press, kiln and printing line will make your order, how many shifts they run, and what the plant does when a kiln is down. Ask who checks the first tile off the line each shift and how the result is recorded.

Plants that run controlled processes answer in specifics: machine counts, test frequencies, reject percentages by stage. Plants that answer in adjectives tend to have little data, and that is the information you need to decide.

Finally, ask for the plant's own reject and downgrade figures by month. Every tile plant produces seconds, and a plant that knows its numbers and can show the trend is controlling its process. A plant that claims to produce no seconds at all is not measuring.
