Uniforms for hotels, hospitals and schools: how the spec differs

Hotel, hospital and school uniforms need different fabrics, wash performance and durability. Here is how to write the spec for each before you ask a manufacturer for a quote.

Uniforms for hotels, hospitals and schools look similar on a tech pack but are bought on very different priorities. Hotels want a smart appearance that survives frequent laundering. Hospitals want fabric that tolerates hot, aggressive washing. Schools want durability and colour that does not fade over a term.

If you are choosing a school uniforms manufacturer or fabric for uniforms in general, start from how the garment will be washed, not how it will look in the sample.

Uniforms for hotels

Hotel uniforms are seen by guests, so appearance matters: crisp collars, even shade and minimal creasing. Poly-cotton blends and polyester-viscose suiting are common because they hold a press. Front-of-house roles often use a smarter suiting weight, while kitchen and housekeeping use a sturdier twill.

Specify shade tolerance across batches, because replacement garments ordered later must match the original. See avoiding shade variation between lots.

Comfort is the other side of the hotel brief. Staff wear uniforms for a full shift, often in warm kitchens or laundries, so ask for a breathable weave and a lining that does not trap heat. A fabric that looks good on a hanger but makes staff uncomfortable leads to complaints from the hotel group, and then to reorders from somewhere else. Wear trials with a few staff before bulk are cheap insurance.

Uniforms for hospitals

Hospital staff uniforms, often called scrubs, are washed hot and often. Fabric must resist shrinkage and colour loss after repeated laundering. Poly-cotton is common, and fabrics with a high polyester share keep their shape and dry quickly.

Ask for colourfastness to washing and perspiration, dimensional change after laundering and pilling results. Your hospital laundry or customer may set the wash temperature, so get that in writing first. Garments used in clinical settings may also have infection-control rules set by the buyer, which sit outside the fabric spec and should be confirmed with them.

School uniforms

School uniforms face rough wear, frequent washing and growth between seasons. Durable twill or drill in shirts and trousers, with reinforced knees and seams, lasts longer. Colour consistency is the main commercial risk, because parents buy replacements across several years.

Include size range and growth allowance in the order plan, and check the inside of the garment for stitching quality. A school uniforms manufacturer should be able to hold a sealed standard and match it each season. See pre-production samples and sealed standards.

What should every uniform spec include?

Whatever the sector, put these in writing before you place the order:

  • Fabric composition, weight in GSM and weave, so you can compare quotes fairly.
  • Wash method and the number of cycles the garment must survive, with the test standard used.
  • Shrinkage limit in warp and weft, and colourfastness grades.
  • Shade approval method and a tolerance for repeat orders.
  • The inspection level and defect limits that will apply at final inspection.
