Unjha cumin and fennel suppliers: how to shortlist them

How to shortlist Unjha cumin suppliers and Unjha fennel seeds exporters, and how to read an Unjha mandi cumin price without mistaking it for a quote.

· 3 min read · Creston & Co

To shortlist Unjha cumin suppliers, you separate the cleaners and packers from the traders, ask each for the plant address and a lot sample, and compare the samples against one specification. The same method works for Unjha fennel seeds exporters. Do not shortlist by the mandi price alone, because the mandi price is not a quote.

Unjha, in north Gujarat, is the main market for cumin and a major one for fennel and other seeds. Why Unjha is the main market for cumin gives the background. This post is about the practical step of choosing who to ask.

What an Unjha mandi cumin price is

The Unjha mandi cumin price is the rate at which raw, uncleaned cumin trades in the market yard on a given day. It is an input to a supplier's cost, not an export offer. An exporter must add cleaning losses, labour, packing, testing, inland transport, port charges and margin.

Remember also that the mandi rate is for the trade's own quality grades, which are not the same as your specification. A lot that trades at a good mandi rate may still fail your purity, colour or residue limits once cleaned and tested.

Mandi rates also change day to day with arrivals and demand, and different quality levels trade at different rates. So we do not quote a mandi rate here, and you should be wary of any supplier who quotes you one as if it were the export price. Ask for an offer on your specification, with a validity date.

Who is in Unjha

Three kinds of company use the Unjha name. All three can supply you, but they differ in how much of the quality they control. How the Unjha, Rajkot and Gondal markets work for buyers explains how each yard operates.

  • Cleaning and packing units that clean seed on their own machines, with machine or sortex lines, and pack for export.
  • Traders and agents who buy and sell in the yard and may or may not have a plant.
  • Exporters with offices in Unjha or in other cities who source from several units.

A shortlisting routine

Start with a written specification covering purity, moisture, foreign matter, cleaning method and tests. Send it to a handful of suppliers, not to fifty.

Ask each one for the plant address, a short video of the cleaning line, the registrations it holds, and a sample drawn from a current lot. Ask whether it does the cleaning itself.

Test the samples at one independent laboratory, so the results are comparable. Then visit or have audited the two best plants. Our factory-audit post, what a factory audit should contain, lists what to see.

Fennel specifics

For fennel, add colour, size and oil content to the specification, and ask whether the supplier knows where the seed was grown, since Gujarat and other origins differ. Confirm that no colour is added. Regulations and residue limits change, so check the current ones with your customs broker before you set the specification.
