What valves are made in Gujarat: gate, globe, ball, butterfly?

Gujarat makes gate, globe, check, ball, butterfly and plug valves in cast iron, carbon steel, stainless steel and bronze, mainly in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot.

Gujarat makes most common industrial valves, including gate, globe, check, ball, butterfly and plug valves. Makers in Ahmedabad, Vadodara and Rajkot supply oil and gas, water, chemical, power and general industry.

The range runs from small threaded brass ball valves to large flanged cast steel gate valves. Each plant tends to specialise in a few types, sizes and pressure classes.

The main valve types

  • Gate valves open fully or shut fully. They suit isolation duty where low pressure drop matters.
  • Globe valves regulate flow. They give better control than gate valves but a higher pressure drop.
  • Check valves stop reverse flow. Swing, lift and dual-plate designs are common.
  • Ball valves give quick quarter-turn shut-off. Floating and trunnion-mounted designs suit different sizes and pressures.
  • Butterfly valves are light and compact. They are widely used for water, HVAC and low-pressure process lines.
  • Plug valves give quarter-turn shut-off for slurries and some chemical duties.
  • Strainers, needle valves and instrument valves are made by many of the same plants.

Materials

Body materials follow the service. Common choices are grey and ductile iron for water, cast carbon steel for oil, gas and steam, and stainless steel for chemicals and food. Bronze and brass are used for small valves. Forged steel is used for small high-pressure valves.

Trim, seats and seals matter as much as the body. Ask for the trim material, seat material and gasket type in writing.

How Gujarat plants are set up

Many valve makers buy castings or forgings from local foundries and forge shops. They machine, assemble, test and paint in-house. Some have their own foundry. Find out which, because body quality starts at the casting.

A good plant has a test bench for shell and seat tests, as described in the hydrostatic pressure test for valves. It also keeps material certificates for every body and bonnet.

Standards and approvals

Valves for oil and gas often need design to API standards, and some buyers want an API monogram licence. Water valves may need local approvals. Pressure equipment going to the EU may need PED compliance. The main design standards are covered in valve standards: API, ANSI and DIN.

Who is responsible for compliance in your market depends on your role as importer. Check with your regulator or a notified body before you sell.

What to check before you order

  • Which types, sizes and pressure classes the plant makes in-house.
  • Whether castings come from its own foundry or from a named local source.
  • Whether test records and material certificates link to each valve serial number.
  • Which approvals and licences the plant holds, and whether they are current.
