What Victorian-style jewellery means in Indian fashion

In Indian fashion, Victorian jewellery is a trade name for dark antique-gold pieces set with heavy stones, loosely inspired by 19th-century European designs. It is popular for weddings and parties.

In the Indian jewellery trade, Victorian jewellery means pieces with a dark, aged gold or bronze tone, densely set with stones such as CZ, coloured glass and pearls. The name nods to 19th-century European jewellery, but the designs are an Indian fashion style rather than historical reproductions.

It sits between traditional bridal jewellery and Western fashion jewellery, which is why it sells for weddings, receptions and festive wear, both in India and in diaspora markets.

Typical features

  • A dark antique gold, rose-brown or bronze finish, often called Victorian finish or polish.
  • Dense settings of white CZ or American diamond stones, frequently with ruby red, emerald green or pearl accents.
  • Floral, scroll and lace-like patterns, with drops and layered pendants.
  • Matching sets: necklace, earrings and sometimes a maang tikka or bangles.

How it is made

Most Victorian-style pieces are cast in brass or alloy, plated, toned to the dark Victorian shade and then stone-set by hand or by a combination of casting and hand setting. Rajkot makers produce this style widely alongside AD and antique ranges.

Because the finish is dark and the stones are many, both the toning and the setting need checking. A set with one or two loose stones per piece will produce returns.

Selling it abroad

Western customers may not recognise the term, so describe the look rather than relying on the name. Words such as antique gold, vintage-inspired and statement bridal set travel better. Show pieces worn, so the scale and weight are clear.

The heavy look also means heavy pieces. Check earring weight and closures, and state approximate weights in listings.

What this means for a buyer

Victorian-style jewellery is a strong seller for festive and wedding ranges, and Rajkot has a deep supply of it. Agree the finish shade and stone quality on a sample before you place bulk, and see which styles sell best in each market when planning a range.

Creston & Co works for buyers only, for a fixed fee agreed in writing. We visit workshops, check finish and stone setting, have samples tested at NABL-accredited labs and supervise packing. Ask for a free sourcing review.

CZ stone grades explained: A, AA, AAA and AAAAA

CZ grades such as A, AAA and AAAAA are trade grades set by stone makers, not an independent standard. Higher grades usually mean better clarity and cut, but you must judge them on samples.
