Arranging jewellery testing and compliance support in India

To arrange jewellery testing in India, pick the tests your market needs, send correctly drawn samples to an accredited lab and keep the report matched to production. A compliance agent can coordinate it.

To arrange jewellery testing in India, first list the substances and standards your destination market regulates, then have samples drawn from the real production material and sent to an accredited laboratory. A jewellery compliance agent coordinates that process and keeps the paperwork in order, but the importer stays legally responsible for what is sold.

Testing is easiest when it is planned before production, not after goods are packed.

Decide what your market requires

Different markets regulate different things. The EU restricts nickel release, lead and cadmium. The US has federal rules for children's jewellery and state rules on cadmium and lead warnings. The UK has its own post-Brexit position. Confirm the current requirements with your customs broker or the regulator before choosing tests.

For the nickel rules, see EU nickel release limits for jewellery, and for the lab method, the EN 1811 nickel release test.

What an agent coordinates

In practice an agent handles the following steps for you:

  • Choosing the lab and agreeing the test scope, so you do not pay for tests your market does not need.
  • Selecting samples from the approved production run, not from a hand-picked prototype.
  • Sending samples and following up on turnaround.
  • Reading the report and flagging any failure, unclear result or mismatch with the product description.
  • Keeping the approved report on file and linking it to the design and batch it covers.

Choose the lab carefully

Allow time in your schedule. Test results can take days or weeks depending on the method, and a failed result means a rework, a retest and more time. Book testing during sampling, not after production, so a failure costs you a sample and not a container. Keep the lab report, the sample photographs and the batch details together in one folder.

Use a laboratory that is accredited for the exact test method, not just a lab with a well-known name. Ask for the accreditation scope and check it. Jewellery testing labs in India and how to choose compares the main options.

Decide how many pieces you need to send. The answer depends on the test and the material, as set out in how many samples a jewellery test needs.

Keep the report tied to production

Also check that the sample description on the report matches your product. A report for a plain brass stud does not cover a stone-set piece with a different plating, so the design name, material and finish on the report should all match what you are importing.

A passing report proves only that the tested sample passed. If the factory changes the alloy, the plating bath or the glue, the result may no longer apply. Write into your purchase order that materials and processes stay as tested, and that any change needs your written approval.

Also check what certificates the factory itself holds, using which certifications an Indian jewellery manufacturer should have.
