For jewellery inspection in India, use a third party when you need independent evidence for a claim, a retailer or a bank, and use your agent for routine control through production. Third party inspection of jewellery is a snapshot on one day, while an agent can watch the whole process.
The two are not rivals. Many importers use an agent for day-to-day checks and bring in an outside inspector for the first large order or for high-value shipments.
What a third-party inspector gives you
Ask the inspection company which inspectors will visit and whether they have inspected jewellery before. Jewellery needs a different eye from garments or hardware: plating colour, stone setting and finish are judged by close visual checks. An inspector used to checking bulk goods may miss details that a jewellery buyer would see at once, so ask for sample reports from similar products.
An independent inspection company sends a trained inspector to the workshop, who samples your goods against a written standard and issues a report with photos. The report carries weight because the inspector has no commercial link to the maker.
The limit is time. An inspector sees the lot on the visit day, usually at the end, and cannot tell you much about how it was made. Defects that are cheap to fix early may by then be costly to correct.
What an agent gives you
An agent in Rajkot can be on the floor several times, checking incoming materials, a first production sample, plating results and the final lot. Early catches save money and time. The weakness is that the agent is not formally independent, so some buyers want a separate opinion for important orders.
The difference is set out in agent inspection vs third-party inspection. If you want an outside firm, an agent can arrange third-party inspection on your behalf.
When to use a third party
These situations justify an outside inspection:
- A first large order with a new supplier, where you have no track record.
- A retailer or marketplace customer that asks for an independent report.
- A dispute risk, where you may need evidence for a replacement or refund claim.
- A shipment where your own agent was not present for production.
How to brief the inspector
Agree who receives the report and what happens on a fail. A report that goes only to the factory defeats the purpose, so ask that it reaches you directly, and settle in advance whether a failed lot is reworked and re-inspected at the factory's cost.
An inspector can only check what you specify. Give them the approved sample, the purchase order, the specification for metal, plating and stones, the AQL and a list of defect classes you treat as critical, major or minor. Without these, the report will be generic.
Photograph the approved counter-sample and send it ahead. What a pre-shipment inspection for imitation jewellery checks shows what a proper scope looks like, including counts, weights and packing.
Next step
We can run the checks ourselves, arrange an outside inspector, or do both, depending on the order. We work only for the buyer, so the report goes to you. Book a free sourcing review to decide the right inspection plan for your next jewellery order.
