Cheap tiles from India: how to buy low price without low quality

Cheap tiles from India are possible without cutting quality, if the saving comes from grade choice, design and volume, not from a quote that hides risk.

You can buy cheap tiles from India without low quality, but only if you choose where to save. Real savings come from the grade you buy, the designs you choose and the volume you commit to. A quote that is simply lower than the rest usually saves money by cutting something you cannot see.

Decide what you can give up before you ask for quotes.

Where do genuine savings come from?

These choices lower cost without lowering the quality of what you receive:

  • Grade: a lower grade sold as such, for projects that do not need first quality, as in tile grades: Premium, Standard and Commercial.
  • Design: simpler designs or fewer faces cost less to produce and sort.
  • Volume: larger orders per design and full containers spread the factory's set-up cost.
  • Standard sizes: formats the plant presses all year are cheaper than special requests.
  • Packing: standard export packing instead of custom boxes, where your market allows.

Where do cheap quotes hide risk?

A very low quote can hide any of these: a lower grade sold as first grade, thinner tiles, looser size tolerance, weaker packing, or mixed shades. The tile may pass a visual check on a sample and fail on the production lot.

The most damaging case is mixed grades in one container. Read how to avoid receiving mixed grades in one tile shipment before you accept a quote far below the others.

How do you test a low quote?

Ask the factory to confirm in writing the grade, thickness, calibre, water absorption and breaking strength, and the sorting method. Request production samples and a laboratory report on the lot. Visit or audit the plant, see what a factory audit report should contain.

Then inspect before loading. A low price is acceptable if the specification is met and verified.

What about buying from a trader?

Traders can sometimes offer low prices on surplus or lower-grade lots. That can be a good deal if you know exactly what the lot is and you can inspect it. It is a poor deal if you cannot trace the factory, as telling a trader from a manufacturer explains.

What should you never trade away?

Do not trade away the checks. Dimensional tolerance, breaking strength and water absorption protect you from claims. Cutting a test to save money costs more when a problem is found after the goods are laid.

Do not trade away the sorting either. Paying a little more for a factory that grades properly is often the cheapest choice over a year, because you avoid returns and customer complaints.

Set a budget by specification, not by headline rate: decide the grade, thickness and tests you need, then ask what each factory charges for exactly that. This turns 'cheap' into a question you can answer with a written quote.
