Indian vs Chinese tile prices: where the gap comes from

Why can Indian and Chinese tile prices differ? Look at cost structure: fuel, labour, scale, freight, duty and product mix, not a headline price comparison.

Tiles price India vs China is not a single comparison, because the gap, if there is one, depends on the tile type, the market, the date and the duty. Any headline figure will be out of date and will hide differences in grade and size.

A better way to compare Indian and Chinese tiles is to look at where the cost of each comes from, and then at what is added before the tile reaches your market.

What drives production cost in each country?

Both industries compete on scale and process. These are the main differences to look at:

  • Fuel: tile kilns run on gas, coal-derived gas or propane, and the local energy price and supply set a large part of the cost. See how gas prices affect Morbi tile costs.
  • Labour: wage levels and the degree of automation differ between the two industries.
  • Scale and automation: very large plants with automated lines reduce unit cost; Morbi competes through many mid-sized plants and a dense supplier network.
  • Raw materials: access to clay, feldspar and other materials, and their transport cost.
  • Product mix: Chinese and Indian plants lean toward different sizes, bodies and finishes.

What changes between factory gate and your warehouse?

Freight from each origin differs by route and season. Duty is the largest variable: some markets apply anti-dumping or other trade measures to tiles from one origin and not the other. As of October 2026 you should check the current measure with the customs authority of your country. Our pages on countries with anti-dumping duties on Indian tiles and import duties in the Gulf, US and EU explain what to look for.

Always compare at landed cost, not at factory price.

What about quality and consistency?

A price gap means little without the grade behind it. Compare tiles on measured properties: water absorption, breaking strength, calibre and shade variation. Read how Morbi tiles compare with tiles from China, Spain and Vietnam.

Buyers who have switched origin for price alone often meet problems in shade control or packing. Check both origins with the same tests.

How should you use this?

Request quotes for the same specification from plants in both countries, in the same Incoterm and unit, and add freight, duty and clearing. If you sell Indian tiles against Chinese ones, the argument is usually service, design range, consistent quality or lead time, not price alone, as selling Indian tiles against Chinese competition explains.

Which tile types see the biggest differences?

The difference varies by product. Standard sizes of wall and floor tiles are made at scale in both countries and compete mainly on cost and service. Large slabs, specialty finishes and thick outdoor tiles depend more on the individual plant than on the country.

That is why a country-level comparison is a weak guide. A good plant in either country will beat a weak one in the other, and the useful comparison is between named quotes on the same specification.
