Each of the three cities has its own speciality. Rajkot is strongest in pumps, diesel engines, castings, machine tools and auto parts. Ahmedabad leans towards process, pharma, textile and packaging machinery. Jamnagar is India's best-known centre for brass and precision turned components.
The lines are not strict. You will find a foundry in Ahmedabad and a packaging machine maker in Rajkot. But the speciality tells you where the deepest supplier base and most experienced workforce sit for your product.
Rajkot
- Submersible, monoblock and centrifugal pumps, with the motors that drive them.
- Small diesel engines and generator sets for farm and light industrial use.
- Grey iron, SG iron and steel castings, often supplied machined.
- Lathes, drilling machines, milling machines and power presses.
- Bearings, auto components and agricultural implements such as rotavators and threshers.
Ahmedabad
- Pharmaceutical machinery such as tablet presses, granulators, coaters and capsule fillers.
- Food processing and packaging machines, including pouch fillers and form-fill-seal machines.
- Textile machinery and parts, reflecting the city's long history in cotton.
- Chemical process equipment such as reactors, tanks and heat exchangers.
- Castings, forgings and fabricated structures for larger industrial users.
Jamnagar
- Turned brass parts such as inserts, fittings, valves and plumbing components.
- Brass electrical parts such as terminals, connectors and pins.
- Precision parts in stainless steel and aluminium from the same turning shops.
- Plated finishes such as nickel, chrome and tin through local platers.
Other nearby centres
Vadodara has heavy engineering and process equipment makers. Sanand, near Ahmedabad, has an automotive cluster with component suppliers around vehicle plants. Many buyers source one product from one city and a related part from another, then consolidate at the port.
The three cities are close enough to work together. Rajkot and Jamnagar are a short drive apart, and Ahmedabad is a few hours away by road. A pump maker in Rajkot may buy brass parts from Jamnagar and control panels from Ahmedabad. That is useful when you want one supplier to manage a mixed order, but it also means more hands touch your product.
How to use this
Start with the city that specialises in your product, because that is where you will find the most capable shortlist. Then check each candidate directly. A city's reputation tells you where to look. It does not tell you which factory is good. Our guide to finding genuine machinery manufacturers in Gujarat explains how to build that shortlist.
Be careful with firms that claim to make products from every city on this list. A Rajkot pump maker that also offers tablet presses and brass inserts is probably trading some of them. That can work, but you should know which items it makes and which it buys in.
