Hotel and hospital linen from India: what to specify

Hotel and hospital linen is bought for how it survives the laundry, not how it feels new. Specify weave, blend, weight, shrinkage and wash performance before you ask for quotes.

Bedsheets for hotels and hospital linen are judged by how they behave after dozens of industrial washes. A sheet that feels soft in a sample can pill, shrink or tear in a commercial laundry. If you are looking for a hotel linen supplier in India or a hospital linen supplier, write the spec around the wash, not the sample.

India has long-established home and institutional textile production, and Gujarat is a source of both fabric and made-up linen.

What fabric suits hotel bedsheets?

Hotels commonly choose percale, a plain weave that feels crisp and wears well, or sateen, which has a smoother and softer hand but snags more easily. Cotton, or a cotton-polyester blend, is usual. Blends resist wrinkles and last longer in repeated washing, while all-cotton feels better to many guests.

Thread count is not the only measure. A very high count in a fine yarn can be less durable than a moderate count in a sturdier yarn. Bedsheet thread counts in India explains what the figures mean.

What does hospital linen need?

Hospital linen is washed hot, often at temperatures set for thermal disinfection. The exact temperature and time depend on the standard your customer follows, so ask them first and write it in the spec. Blends with a high polyester content tolerate heat well, and white or light colours make soil easy to see.

Reinforced hems, double-stitched seams and tight tolerances on size help linen survive the laundry. We cover textile spec only, and any infection-control rules for the linen sit with the buyer and their laundry.

How do you control shrinkage and size?

Sheets that shrink end up too small to tuck in. Set a maximum dimensional change after a stated number of washes, and have the lot tested before shipment. Our guide to home textile shrinkage limits explains what to ask for.

Ask for finished sizes after washing, not only before. Common sizes differ between markets, so see bedsheet sizes by market.

Durability testing is worth the cost on a large contract. Ask for tear strength and bursting strength on the finished fabric, and for pilling results after washing. Where possible, run a wash trial of sample sheets at your laundry's own cycle before approving bulk. Many hotel groups find that a modest fabric-weight increase pays for itself in fewer replacements, so compare quotes on the number of washes the linen survives, not only on the purchase value.

What belongs in the specification?

Put these items in writing:

  • Fibre content, weave, yarn count and thread count with tolerances.
  • Fabric weight in GSM and finished size, with the tolerance on each.
  • Maximum shrinkage in length and width after the agreed number of industrial washes.
  • Colourfastness to washing and, for coloured linen, to bleach if your laundry uses it.
  • Hem, seam and label requirements, and the packing method per set.
