The tiles price per container is not one number. A container of tiles has a goods value, loading and inland costs, ocean freight, and charges at the other end. Which of these you pay depends on the Incoterm.
Searches for a container of tiles cost or tiles freight cost from India get a range of answers because each depends on the tile, the weight and the route. We do not quote figures, but we can show how the total is built.
What is the goods value made of?
The goods value is the factory price multiplied by the quantity loaded. The quantity depends on the tile size and weight: how many square metres fit in a 20 ft container and the container weight limit for tiles set how much you can load.
Because tiles are heavy, a container is limited by weight, not volume. That is why the total for a container changes with tile thickness even if the area is the same.
Which costs sit between the factory and the ship?
Before the container is on the vessel, there is trucking to the port, container handling, export clearance and any pallet or crating costs. Under FOB the seller normally covers these, but the quote should say so. FOB price for tiles from India explains this in detail.
Packing choices matter here: pallets cost more than loose loading but cut breakage, as discussed in pallets or loose loading for tiles.
What does freight depend on?
Ocean freight depends on the route, the container size, the shipping line, the season and the market at the time of booking. Surcharges can be added for fuel, congestion or peak periods. Ask your forwarder to quote the all-in cost to your warehouse and list each surcharge.
Freight rates move often, so a quote has a short validity. Do not fix your selling price until you have a current freight quote.
What is added at destination?
The buyer pays for these at the other end:
- Import duty and taxes, which depend on your country and the tile's customs classification.
- Port and terminal charges, and any storage if the container waits.
- Customs broker fees and inspection charges.
- Transport from the port to the warehouse, and unloading.
- Insurance, if the goods were not covered by the seller.
How do you plan the container itself?
Work backward from the weight limit. Ask the factory for the weight of a box and a pallet, and the maximum payload your shipping line accepts for the route. Then calculate the number of boxes that can be loaded and the area they cover.
Lighter or thinner tiles may fill the volume before they reach the weight limit, while thick tiles reach the weight limit with empty space left. Knowing which applies tells you whether a change in thickness will change your freight cost per square metre.
Ask your forwarder to confirm free days for the container at the port and the detention rules. Delays at clearance can generate charges that are not in any quote, and knowing the allowance helps you plan unloading.
